Polk County has been recognized by the state for their strong arts education programs.  The School Board won an award from the Florida Alliance for Arts Education, and two schools were chosen as Arts Achieve model schools, by FAAE - Davenport School for the Arts and Harrison School for the Arts.

Dr. Mary Palmer has been a powerful advocate for arts education for many years - she founded FAAE almost 20 years ago.  This September she retires from UCF to begin her own consulting company.  One project is Through the Arts, designed to integrate the arts into academics.

A new vocal ensemble in Orlando, Voces Liricas del Mundo, is giving the U.S. premiere of a comic opera by Alberto Guidabaldi - Historia de aquel que se caso con mujer muda, or The Story of the Man with the Silent Wife.  Performances are Friday, Aug. 24 at 8pm (a reception is at 7) and Sunday, Aug. 26 at 3 at the Puerto Rican Association of Central Florida - 1865 N.
