The Orlando Philharmonic teams us with Casa de Mexico for the 2nd Annual Benefit Concert to celebrate Mexican Independence Day.  The concert features Disney's Mariachi Cobre, one of the best known mariachi bands in the country.  The concert is Saturday night at 8 at the Bob Carr Auditorium.  For tickets, call 407-770-0071 or through Ticketmaster at 407-839-3900.

 Cultural Highlights -

Amateurs opens Friday night at Melbourne Civic Theatre

Women Playwright's Initiative presents the world premiere of Five Women in Havana, the winning play from its annual competition.  It's by North Carolina author Ree Howell.  It's at Orlando Repertory Theatre through Sunday.

Countertenor Ralph Daniel Rawe (from Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba) will perform Sunday night at Benoit Glazer's monthly House Concert, along with a string trio.  See his website for directions; guests usually bring a bottle of wine and an appetizer.

Luminous Landscapes opens Friday at the Museum of Florida Art in DeLand - artist Fran Hardy will be at the Opening Reception Friday from 5-7pm.  Her work will also be on display at the Millenia Gallery at the end of the month.  Fran is also teaching a workshop in DeLand.

The concert series at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Oviedo opens Saturday night at 7pm with the popular Brass Band of Central Florida.

Two exhibits are at the Brevard Art Museum - Running with Scissors and an exhibit by Cecily Hangen.

Dicken to Benton - Rare Books and Works on Paper is an unusual exhibit at the Morse Museum in Winter Park.  It's been extended through October 14; also on display for a limited time is Tiffany's Oyster Bay window, which is usually at the Met in New York City.

 

The Steinway Society of Central Florida is a program providing refurbished pianos to needy piano students.  The group started a piano bank and accepts donations of "gently" used spinnets and console pianos.  Several events take place this weekend - two fundraising events, including a performance by a rock band with WKMG anchor Bob Frier Friday night at Dexter's in Lake Mary.  Learn more at the Steinway website (scroll down and click on "More Info")
