November 26, 2007—The recent trip to the Smithsonian Institution for two days worth of book signings included one additional stop. It was an invitation from National Public Radio in Washington, D.C. for an interview with Scott Simon of Weekend Edition Saturday about my book "Final Countdown". Whenever I’ve spoken with Scott in the past, regarding the aftermath of Hurricane Charley in 2004 or the Columbia disaster, it was over the phone. This time it was face-to-face in the NPR studios. When I arrived, the host of NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday greeted me with a bear hug. A good start, I thought. After the taping, he paid me the additional compliment of asking me to sign his copy of the book. Not for himself, but rather for his two daughters.

After the interview, I visited my colleagues in the NPR newscast unit, with whom I deal most often. Like most people, when I first heard these radio veterans, I conjured up in my head what I thought they looked like. The catch for you, me, and almost everybody is, that this mental image rarely matches what radio people look like in reality. So, here’s a primer on telling the voices from the faces. I’m the guy I the striped shirt on the left. From left to right at the back is Kathy Rushlow, Brenda Box, Pete McLeod, and Julia Bailey. In the front row from left to right are newscast anchors Lakshmi Singh and Giles Snyder. Hail, hail, the gang’s all here.

I've also included a link to the Weekend Edition interview which is...http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=16473224
