Last week, The Arts Connection began a series on the Youthful Offender Program at the Orange County Jail.  It's run by John Richter, who uses a variety of special classes to keep young male inmates motivated to get their GEDs.  These youth are in jail instead of juvenile detention because they are being tried as adults.  Among the classes is one on poetry with Denise Manning, the subject of last week's program, the Literature 'N Living class (click here to read the New York Times article about authors visiting the class) and theatre companies performing in jail, including John DiDonna.
Next week, the series will conclude with Poetic Logic producer Sara Schlossmann and her conversation with inmates from Denise Manning's poetry class.  This series is part of WMFE InDepth: Central Florida Crime Crisis - you can listen to all the reports in the series at the InDepth website.
