Monday, 1/14

The History Center presents its annually changing exhibition, Orlando Remembered III: Orlando A-Z. In alphabetical order, this exhibit highlights many of Orlando's most memorable, influential, and interesting people, places, and things. This exhibit allows guests to discover who and what created the city beautiful, before the era of theme parks.

This Monday evening holds the debut of a Fringe Festival favorite at a new venue. Dewey Chaffee, whose improvisational and comedic shows have won over audiences and spawned a small but growing cult of fans, debuts his one-man, multiple character comedic show at Glo Lounge this evening.

The Daytona Beach International Festival presents the Emerson String Quartet, performing Johannes Brahms' three string quartets at the News-Journal Center in Daytona Beach. The Emerson String Quartet is winner of eight Grammy awards, and the concert is slated to be the foremost chamber music event in Daytona.

For live theater, visit the Plaza Theater, which opens its run of MENOPAUSE THE MUSICAL tomorrow with a matinee showing. The comedy Menopause The Musical has entertained and inspired women all across the country and also internationally. The show has an intended message that is conveyed with warmth and humor.

And the Orlando Science Center has a new interactive exhibit called Robots. Guided by the fun characters from the Pixar movie Robots, this playful exhibit examines the affect robots have had on our everyday lives and the future of robotics. The Orlando Science Center showcases the history of robots, with many famous bots on display, and includes interactive games and the opportunity to build your own robot.

Wednesday, 1/16

The Orlando City Hall's Mayor's Gallery is specifically dedicated to Central Florida artists, and tonight it hosts the opening of a new exhibit called Inside City Hall, by artists Maya Forrester and Keith Theriot.

Tonight the Southeast Museum of Photography will hold a film screening of The Wind Will Carry Us, by Abbas Kiarostami. This film deals with the complex issues of life and death, traditional and modern, and local and global as it chronicles the experiences of a group of journalists and production engineers who are documenting the mouring rituals of a Kurdish village antipating the death of an elderly woman.

The folk rock band America will be performing at the King Center tonight. Four decades of music making and a blending of genres and styles created enduring appeal, and the band was recently inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. The King Center will completely change pace tomorrow night, when it invites the the award-winning Golden Dragon Acrobats to perform. This skilled troupe uses theatrical techniques and features traditional dance, accented with intricate costumes and ancient and contemporary music.

Tonight in Kissimmee The Platform Theatre company opens their production of FOR COLORED GIRLS WHO HAVE CONSIDERED SUICIDE/WHEN THE RAINBOW IS ENUF by Ntozake Shange. This stageplay is a choreopoem, or a poem choreographed to music, and through a series of 20 seperate poems, it brings to the stage a perspecitve of what it is to be female and black in the modern United States.

The Seaside Music Theater opens this evening the new gospel musical, CROWNS. Written by Regina Taylor, this play features gospel hymns and rhythm and blues to tell its story.

And Olivier Berault will give a talk tonight at 7 at The Holocaust Memorial Center Museum, with updates on the events occurring in Darfur. He has a perspective like no other, as he is currently serving in the emergencies program at Human Rights Watch and was one of the HRW workers responsible for the pictures in the exhibit THE SMALLEST WITNESS: THE CRISIS IN DARFUR THROUGH CHILDREN'S EYES, which is currently on display at the The Holocaust Memorial Center Museum.

Saturday, 1/19

This is a weekend of music. Tonight the Brevard Symphony Orchestra presents a prodigious concert experience with the great masterworks of three musical giants- Beethoven, Schumann, and 20 th Century master, Elliott Carter. Pianist Andrew von Oeyen will perform Beethoven's fiery 1 st Piano Concerto, and the Brevard Symphony Orchestra's string section will perform Carter's nostalgic Elegy. Schumann's Symphony No. 3 Rhenish, closes this stirring program.

St. Luke's Concert Series continues tonight with Richard Greenwood directing the Orlando Concert Band in "A Celebration of Song and Dance" presented at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. The concert will debut Christopher Marshall's Rondorlando, and choreographed dance segements will add a visual dimension to the event.

And the Brevard Early Music Ensemble begins its 2008 concert series this Sunday at the Cocoa Beach Library with two matinee performances. This group performs music ranging from the 13th to the 17th century, played on the musical instruments used in each specific era.
