Human Rights Watch was interviewing adult refugees from Darfur in 2005, while their children were kept busy with crayons and paper.  The drawings they made are horrifying images of the violence they experienced in the Sudan province, where some believe genocide is taking place.  An exhibit of those drawings is at the Holocaust Memorial Resource & Education Center in Maitland through January 31st.

Olivier Bercault from Human Rights Watch will speak at the center tonight at 7pm
about the crisis in Darfur and the artwork.  The event is free.

In this segment, a look at several arts education initiatives.

First - UCF students returned to school last week, including over 400 elementary education majors who are getting ready for their first student teaching experience. They will be the first to participate in a new education program that fully integrates the arts into the classoom.

Dr. Mary Palmer is a consultant for the new UCF program, as well as for ACE - Arts for a Complete Education/Florida Alliance for the Arts.  The organization recently moved its office back to UCF after a few years in Tallahassee, hoping to expand partnerships to support arts education in the schools and in the community at large.   You are invited to join your local ACE Coalition to be involved in arts education for schools and communities.

Finally - Polk County school Superintendent, Gail McKinzie, was named Administrator Of The Year last week by the Florida Music Educators’ Association, in recognition of her support for the county's strong arts education programs.  The Arts Connection reported on the school district last fall after the school board and individual schools received several state awards.  Read more about the Fine Arts in Polk County Schools.
