Decision 2008: As Florida Considers Property Tax Reform, So Does Georgia

(January 28, 2008) Floridians will decide tomorrow whether to approve or reject a constitutional amendment to reform the state's property tax system. Two key parts of the proposal include an additional $25,000 homestead exemption, and the ability of homeowners to carry assessment caps with them when they move to another home what's known as "portability". Florida isn't the only state considering property tax reform this week. Lawmakers in Georgia are also tackling the issue, and if they're able to pass a plan during their regular session, voters will have the final say this fall. 90.7's David Pitman spoke with Dr. Richard Hawkins, associate professor economics at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, who explained there are a number of property tax proposals lawmakers in Georgia are considering.
