How the Polk County Pileup Could Impact Public Opinion on Prescribed Burns in Florida

(January 31, 2008) -- Officials in Volusia and Marion Counties say they plan prescribed burns sometime over the next few weeks to get rid of invasive plants and fuel for future wildfires. In the meantime, the investigation continues into the cause of a deadly pileup along Interstate 4 in Polk County. About 70 cars were involved in a series of crashes that shut down a 14-mile stretch of I-4 for a day-and-a-half. The incident was intially blamed on smoke from a prescribed burn in the area that got out of control and mixed with heavy fog to create near-zero visibility. As investigators try to determine whether that was in fact the cause, 90.7's David Pitman spoke with John Kohler, who was the Orlando district manager for the State Division of Forestry before his retirement last year. David asked him what could happen if the Polk County pileup results in greater public opposition to prescribed burns.
