 Monday, 2/25

The next concert for the 2007-2008 concert series, CONCERTS AT EMMAUS, takes place tonight at 7 at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Orange City. It will feature the Stetson University Concert Choir, directed by Dr. Alan Raines.

This is your last week to view paintings by Rick Jones, on display at Stardust Coffee and Film. The exhibit features new work by the artist, as well as many of his long-standing favorites.

Cranes Comedy performs a free show at the Eddie Rose Amphitheater in Cranes Roost Park tomorrow night at 7. This particular show will feature PG 13 comedy, and a special surprise guest.

The Baraka Collection is a new art gallery that aims at showcasing artwork by international artists and artisans from different parts of the world. They will debut their World Music Series tomorrow night at the gallery in the Hannibal Square area in Winter Park. The event begins at 5:30, with a screening of "Improvisation," a documentary by Raed Andoni, followed by a reception and meeting with Le Trio Joubran, a Palestinian Oud group based in Paris, France, who will perform a free concert at 8.

Tomorrow the Stetson University Big Band Jazz Ensemble will offer a winter concert, featuring guest woodwind performer Sid Blair of Ormond Beach, at 7:30, with director Dr. George West, head of Jazz Studies at Stetson.

Daytona Beach College presents the musical MY FAIR LADY, with curtain up at 7:30, begininng Thursday in the Theater Center on the DBC Daytona Beach Campus. The performances will run this weekend and next.

This is your last week to see THE RAINMAKER at the Mad Cow Theater's Stage Left. Performances will be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30, and a 2:30 matinee on Sunday.

And in honor of Leap Year, performance artist Brian Feldman will present "LEAP YEAR DAY", an unprecedented performance art piece in front of Orlando City Hall at City Commons Plaza. Beginning at 12:00 a.m. Friday, Feldman will leap off of a 12-foot hight summit, repeating the leap every 3:56 seconds for a total of 366 times in 24 consecutive hours.

Wednesday, 2/27

After a 40-year hiatus, The Garden Theater is reopening as a performing arts venue in West Orange County. The renovation has been completed, and this weekend will celebrate the grand opening with a dedication gala. The gala weekend begins Friday with the debut of CURTAIN UP!, followed by a concert by Broadway star Davis Gaines, performing songs from The Phantom of the Opera.

This Friday from 7 to 9 there will be an artists soiree held at The Painter's Daughter in downtown Mount Dora. This event will showcase works of artist Jimmy Lovejoy, known for his sculptured paintings featuring the American West and wildlife themes. The artist will be available for a meet and greet, and local musician, Robert Cohen, will provide musical entertainment.

Standard Entertainment will present local filmmaker and Apopka resident John Vizzusi's latest documentary, "Electric Heart," the story of jazz musician Don Ellis. The documentary features interviews exploring the life and music of Ellis with musical giants such as Maynard Fergasun, Pulitzer Winning Composer, Gunther Schuller, and Pianist Milcho Leviev.  This special screening will take place at Premiere Cinemas 14 in Orlando Fashion Square Friday at 7:30.

And in honor of Women's History Month, Seminole Community College will welcome The Center for Contemporary Dance to their Sandford/Lake Mary Campus Theater, performing "Primordia: The WatchKeeper," a modern-day fairytale ballet. There will be performances Friday and Saturday night at 8, and a Sunday matinee at 2.

Thursday, 2/28

The Henegar Center for the Arts in downtown Melbourne opens its production of Neil Simon's Broadway comedy, CALIFORNIA SUITE. The show will begin its run this Friday, running through March 16, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8, and Sundays at 2.

At the historic State Theater in downtown Eustis, the Bay Street Players will present An Evening of One-Acts, an offering of five short plays in one night, as part of the Bay Street Project Series. There will be four chances to see this event. The first will be this Friday at 8, followed by Sunday at 2, and then March 7th and 8th at 8.

 Music LIVE! will conclude its 2008 Mainstage Opera season with its fully-staged production of Gilbert & Sullivan's comic operetta, "Pirates of Penzance," at the Lake Sumter Community College Paul P. Williams Fine Arts Auditorium this Saturday at 7:30 and Sunday at 2.

And in honor of Black History Month, the Orange County Regional History Center will host a special lecture by Bethune-Cookman University professor, Dr. Cheryll R. Hardison-Dayton, regarding the status of black women in America from the 1960s to today.  This special event will take place tomorrow, with a reception at 7 followed by the lecture at 7:30.

Friday, 2/29

Arts on Douglas will open a new group exhibition this Saturday entitled MIXED TO THE MAX, running until March 29. This exhibition features works in collage, assemblage and mixed media by nine Central Florida artists, both independents as well as those represented by the gallery. There will be an opening reception tomorrow from 4-7.

The Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach opens their production of the musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, tonight at 8. Performance dates are Fridays and Saturdays at 8, and Sundays at 2, and this show will run until March 16.

Jeanine Taylor Folk Art Gallery will open their spring show tomorrow with SOLID MEMORIES, by artist Adam Farrington. This edgier artist paints and welds steel into images of New Orleans - pre and post Katrina. There will be a Meet the Artist and Opening Reception tomorrow for 6 to 9.

The Atlantic Center for the Arts hosts the Volusia County Select, an annual juried student exhibition showcasing the work of Volusia County's high school artists, running until March 26. There will be an opening reception tomorrow from 4-7, and will feature a Juror Talk, including discussion on artistic resources and portfolio development.

And the exhibition American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell opens tomorrow at the Orlando Museum of Art. This in-depth exhibition will feature an installation of 41 original paintings and the complete set of 323 archival Saturday Evening Post cover tear sheets spanning 47 years, and will run until May 26. The museum offers audio tours, as well as gallery talks held monthly to provide visitors with more insight into Rockwell's style and paintings.
