Airport Security Screener Turnover Causes Labor, Security Concerns

(February 27, 2008) USA Today reported this week that one out of every five airport security screeners left their jobs last year, for reasons that have mostly to do with pay and working conditions. The turnover rate for screeners at Orlando International Airport is also right at 20 percent although that has improved from nearly 35 percent just a few years ago. Don Thomas is the president of the American Federation of Government Employees, Local 556, which represents TSA workers at all Florida airports. He told 90.7's David Pitman that although the workers have union representation, the union has no negotiating power with the federal government. Thomas says that's one of the key complaints he's heard from local screeners who've quit.
