A POSTCARD FROM HARVARD—

April 21, 2008—Well, the talk about “Final Countdown” at Harvard’s Museum of Natural History went just fine. The audience was attentive, they laughed at the right moments, asked lots of intelligent questions about the book, and they didn’t throw tomatoes. That’s always a plus.

I was slightly concerned about being upstaged by the backdrop during my presentation. Remember those science kits you got when you where a kid? The ones where you could grow small tree-like crystals in water overnight? Those small structures could sit on your desk. Now, check out the photo here. Behind the podium was a gypsum crystal four feet tall and seven feet wide in a display case. That’s just one of the exhibits at Harvard’s Museum of Natural History, which includes a unique collection of three thousand handmade glass flowers. Harvard artisans created them in 1886 as a teaching aid for botany majors.

Again, I’d like to offer my thanks to the Mount Washington Observatory for their flattering invitation to come and speak during their Spring fundraiser. Following the talk, they staged a book signing where I got the chance to meet one-on-one with many of the people who braved the rain that night to support the Observatory. If you’d like a signed copy of “Final Countdown”, Mount Washington has inscribed copies available through their website at…
