Monday, 5/26 The 2008 World Ballet Competition takes place this week at the Orange County Convention Center’s Linda Chapin Auditorium. The finale with the winners is Saturday night at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center. This is the last week to see an exhibit by Mark Messersmith at the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland. He’s known for his dark, almost disturbing paintings of the current state of the environment here in Florida. Also closing this week is PAINT THE TOWN at Orlando City Hall, featuring images of the city and surrounding communities. and a new Artist-in-Residence program has started at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smryna Beach where master artists teach a 3-week workshop. You have a chance to meet two of the artists this week composer George Lewis will give a presentation tomorrow afternoon at 2 he’s the Director of the Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia University. And on Thursday at 2, visual artist Rob Pruitt will given an an illustrated talk.www.atlanticcenterforthearts.org
Tuesday, 5/27 Ed McDonald will give a talk tomorrow at Noon at the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona. He is an award-winning artist and graduate of the photography program at Daytona Beach College. These art exhibit close soon Paintings by Bryce Hammond and Trish Thompson can be seen through tomorrow at the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Colors of Florida watercolors by Brennan Gorrie closes Thursday at Historic Bok Sanctuary in Lake Wales The Lakeland Art Guild Spring Show closes Friday at Florida Southern College The Annual Juried Art Show also closes Friday at the Osceola Center for the Arts in Kissimmee and closing Saturday is an exhibit by local artists Vicki Jones and Robin Maria Pedrero and Canadian Ela Steel it’s on display at Dandelion Communitea Cafe in Thornton Park.
Wednesday, 5/28 The world premiere of SWIMMING AFTER DARK is tomorrow night. The new play was the winner of annual script competition held by Women Playwright’s Initiative. It runs Thursday through Sunday at Rollins College’s Fred Stone Theatre. A new film series begins tomorrow night at The Painter’s Daughter Gallery in Mount Dora. BABY FACE from 1933 begins the series which will focus on films about women’s struggles to overcome obstacles. Each film in the monthly series will be followed by a discussion led by documentary filmmaker Linda Kraus. There’s an Opening Reception Thursday night for ARTRAGEOUS an exhibit by adults of fun and unusual art aimed at children. The Reception is at the Lake Wales Arts Center from 5 until 7 tomorrow. and an exhibit of mixed media work by Tony Savoie closes Saturday at Arts on Douglas in New Smyrna Beach
Thursday, 5/29 ASSASSINS opens tonight at Mad Cow Theatre the Tony-award winning Stephen Sondheim musical looks at the lives of 9 presidential assassins. These plays close this weekend BAREFOOT IN THE PARK at Daytona Beach College, where student actors share the stage with local veterans. and another Neil Simon play, GOD’S FAVORITE, closes this weekend at Melbourne Civic Theatre and there’s an Opening Reception tomorrow night for two new exhibits at the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland - Digital Art in the Post Digital Age features work by faculty from several Florida colleges; and A Photographic LegacY features work by 3 "generations" of artists - Yousef Karsh, a pioneers of 20th-century portrait photograpy; Karsh’s protégé, Herman Leonard, known for his documentation of jazz musicians; and his protégé, Jenny Bagert.
Friday, 5/30 The Moonlight Players in Clermont will stage THE DINNER GAME it opens tonight The Russian Ballet of Orlando presents Cinderella, tonight at 7 at Northland Church in Longwood. The full-length ballet is set to the music of Prokofiev and features guest artists from the Sarasota Ballet. http://www.orlandocityballet.org/ Meet Howdy Doody puppeteer Pady Blackwood, tonight at the Orlando Public Library the free program starts at 7:00. Then on Saturday, young children can enjoy the THREE LITTLE PIGS, presented by the City of Orlando Puppetroupe. There are 2 shows at 11am and 2pm at the Beardall Senior Center on Delaney Avenue. There’s also a puppet-making workshop following each performance. and the Plaza Theatre plays host to an evening of art and the blues tomorrow night. First, at 6pm, local artists will demonstrate in the theatre lobby, including several tatoo artists. Then from 7 until midnight, enjoy an evening of blues with the Josh Miller Band, The Smokin' Torpedoes and Bobby Blackmon.
Saturday, 5/31 Gala with the Stars is tonight, featuring the winners of this week’s World Ballet Competition. It starts at 7:30 at the Bob Carr Performings Arts Center. Historic Bok Sanctuary’s Summer Music Series begins tonight with the jazz and blues band, STREET LEVEL. Also at the Sanctuary in Lake Wales, a new exhibit opens today featuring photography by Beverly Gustafson of Winter Haven. Another new exhibit called SKIN DEEP features paintings by Dawn Rosendahl at Gallery Q on Mills Avenue. and closing tomorrow is Confessions of an Urban Primitive work by Carl Knickerbocker at Jeanine Taylor Folk Art in Sanford
