Monday, 5/26

The 2008 World Ballet Competition takes place this week at the Orange County Convention Center’s Linda Chapin Auditorium. The finale with the winners is Saturday night at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center.

This is the last week to see an exhibit by Mark Messersmith at the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland. He’s known for his dark, almost disturbing paintings of the current state of the environment here in Florida.

and a new Artist-in-Residence program has started at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smryna Beach where master artists teach a 3-week workshop. You have a chance to meet two of the artists this week composer George Lewis will give a presentation tomorrow afternoon at 2 he’s the Director of the Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia University. And on Thursday at 2, visual artist Rob Pruitt will given an an illustrated talk.

Ed McDonald will give a talk tomorrow at Noon at the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona. He is an award-winning artist and graduate of the photography program at Daytona Beach College.

The world premiere of SWIMMING AFTER DARK is tomorrow night. The new play was the winner of annual script competition held by Women Playwright’s Initiative. It runs Thursday through Sunday at Rollins College’s Fred Stone Theatre.

A new film series begins tomorrow night at The Painter’s Daughter Gallery in Mount Dora. BABY FACE from 1933 begins the series which will focus on films about women’s struggles to overcome obstacles. Each film in the monthly series will be followed by a discussion led by documentary filmmaker Linda Kraus.

There’s an Opening Reception Thursday night for ARTRAGEOUS an exhibit by adults of fun and unusual art aimed at children. The Reception is at the Lake Wales Arts Center from 5 until 7 tomorrow.

Meet Howdy Doody puppeteer Pady Blackwood, tonight at the Orlando Public Library the free program starts at 7:00. Then on Saturday, young children can enjoy the THREE LITTLE PIGS, presented by the City of Orlando Puppetroupe. There are 2 shows at 11am and 2pm at the Beardall Senior Center on Delaney Avenue. There’s also a puppet-making workshop following each performance.

and the Plaza Theatre plays host to an evening of art and the blues tomorrow night. First, at 6pm, local artists will demonstrate in the theatre lobby, including several tatoo artists.
