Catholic Bishops Meet In Orlando

June 12, 2008 -- Emerging research into the use of stem cells from umbilical cord blood is generating excitement in the Catholic Church, which is holding a major conference in Orlando starting today. Right now, cord blood stem cells are being used to treat cancers of the blood, such as leukemia and lymphoma. But in the last few years, some scientists have found those stem cells may also be able to grow into other kinds of cells, like embryonic stem cells can. Embryonic stem cell research will be a big topic at the spring meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Orlando. The bishops will vote on a formal statement against embryonic stem-cell research. Bishop Thomas Winski of the Orlando Diocese says it will essentially codify the church's long-running stance on the issue.
