Florida Volunteers Help Haiti, Rest of Caribbean, Prepare and Recover from Storms

September 12, 2008 -- As Hurricane Ike closes in on the Texas Gulf Coast, the recovery effort is just beginning in the Caribbean, where Ike left a wide path of destruction, particularly in the Turks and Caicos, and in Haiti. We wanted to know more about how Caribbean nations prepare for and respond to big storms. Carolyn Rose Avila is the president of the Florida Association for Volunteer Action in the Caribbean and the Americas, or FAVACA. She'll be heading to Haiti later this month to help provide training and expertise. Avila says people in the Caribbean face storms with a mixture of preparation and panic. ** Editor's Note -- FAVACA this year is receiving upwards of $700 thousand in support from the station, with about a million or more coming from federal and private contributions.
