November 28, 2008—It’s undocking day aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour, and Astronaut Greg Chamitoff is joining the Shuttle crew while Sandy Magnus takes his place on the International Space Station. If past experience is any indication, he might want to use styrofoam coffee cups for the first few days back…

Chamitoff admits he hasn’t used his legs much during his six months on the International Space Station, except for running on the treadmill. He thinks he may have to learn to walk again once he’s back on the ground. One thing returning astronauts sometimes report are broken coffee cups.

When you’re in orbit, you float and so does everything around you like cameras, tool, and personal items. So, you can let go of things if you want, reach for something else, and the camera or tool is waiting for you in mid air. Back on Earth, some returning astronauts forget they’re under normal gravity, let go of a coffee cup to reach for something, and CRASH.

On the book front…for those of you who don’t subscribe to SIRIUS/XM, there’s a way to listen in to the great job the Bob Edwards Show did on the liftoff. He and I had a great hour-long discussion about NASA and “Final Countdown” to launch-time. Here’s a link to hear the program…

Also, if you’d like to get a stocking stuffer and avoid the crowds of “Black Friday”, go to wmfe.org, and off to the right is a link to amazon.com where part of your purchase price goes to Orlando’s NPR station. Otherwise, you can link here…
