Florida's Citrus Chief Says Disease Seriously Threatens Industry

December 11, 2008 -- The chief of Florida's Department of Citrus issued a dire warning to lawmakers this week. Ken Keck said the state's citrus industry could be wiped out in ten years, if a disease known as citrus greening isn't eradicated. Greening is not harmful to humans, but it makes from infected trees inedible. Ken Keck says the citrus department and its board of directors, called the Florida Citrus Commission, put $20 million originally meant for advertising this year into research on how to fight the disease. 90.7's David Pitman reached Keck by phone at the department's Lakeland headquarters. David asked him how the commission is spending that money.
