United Arts Works To Keep Cultural Field Trips Alive in Orange County

March 23, 2009 -- The organization that helps put together cultural field trips for Orange County Public School Students has launched a new effort to keep trips to the Orlando Science Center, the ballet, and the symphony from being a thing of the past. The Orange County School board is facing a $240 million budget gap. Last week, the board took a preliminary vote to eliminate "special" field trips. Those trips cost the district about $300,000 a year in transportation expenses. Margot Knight is President and CEO of United Arts of Central Florida. 90.7's David Pitman caught up with her while she was traveling, and she said the group is now hitting up private and corporate donors to create a fund that would pay for "some" of the cost of busing the kids.
