"Follow The Money" -- Will Extra Unemployment Benefits Help Speed Up Florida's Economic Recovery?

May 11, 2009 -- As the federal stimulus dollars flow into Florida, we continue our occasional series, "Follow The Money", to keep track of where all that cash is going. A sizable chunk will go to help the unemployed. But the 2009 legislative session ended last Friday with mixed results for people in Florida who've lost their jobs during this recession. Lawmakers accepted $700 million in federal stimulus money to keep benefits flowing for several extra weeks. But they declined to take another batch of unemployment stimulus money that came with strings attached. 90.7's David Pitman sat down with University of Central Florida economics professor Sean Snaith. David asked him whether the first pot of money, which will extend jobless benefits for 250,000 Floridians for an additional 20 weeks, might speed up an economic recovery.
