May 19, 2009-- The Atlantis crew wished Hubble "the best" after shutting the doors on the telescope for the last time. The Shuttle will return, possibly, the most historic piece of the observatory during Friday's planned landing. It's an instrument called COSTAR which was removed to make way for the new Wide Field Camera-3. COSTAR was invented to save Hubble in 1993 after the telescope's main mirror was found to be flawed and gave only blurred images. Think of it as a big set of contact lenses. Newer parts have been modified to accommodate the bad mirror, so COSTAR isn't needed anymore. The part's next life might be as a new exhibit for the Smithsonian.
