Space Program Review Expected Today

A federal committee's report due to be released today may put a damper on NASA's plans to use the Ares rocket for manned flights to the moon. The U.S. Human Space Flight Review Committee released a summary of its report last month. It found that, without at least an additional three billion dollars in funding, NASA can't afford to both develop the Ares rocket and continue to operate the International Space Station,. The panel is expected to release the complete report today and will forward its findings to the president but the committee's recommendations are not binding and any changes to the space program will be initiated by Congress and the president. The committee is chaired by Norm Augustine, a former aerospace industry executive. He retired as CEO of Lockheed Martin in 1997.
